Visitor from Honduras to Washington County

July 4–8, 2007

The Honduras Partnership Committee brought 12 young people and 2 adult advisors for a Maine visit in June and July. After a week at Pilgrim Lodge, each Honduran guest visited two different hosting churches. From July 4 through 8, we had an amazing opportunity to experience the Honduras Partnership in a personal way. Our church and the Whitneyville Congregational Church sponsored a Honduran visitor.

Our guest was Matilde Elizabeth Fiallos Gomez, called "Maty". She is the wife of Miguel Urrea who is the pastor of the church in El Progresso and the vice president of the Evangelical and Reformed Synod of Honduras. Maty and her husband have two daughters, ages 12 and 13. Maty stayed in the home of Jim and Mary Folsom in Roque Bluffs, who really enjoyed her visit.

Pastor Betty Duzen, Maty, Mary FolsomOur visitor was very enthusiastic, and interested in learning about our churches and Washington County. Maty enjoyed the beautiful scenery, and met a lot of local people. She spent much of one day with Pastor Betty Duzen, visiting some members of the Whitneyville Church, and accompanying Pastor Betty on some errands–a typical day in the life of a country pastor.

Maty visits West Quoddy LightA highlight for Maty was the visit to West Quoddy Head State Park, especially the lighthouse. Maty had really wanted to see a lighthouse, and to go up inside the light. When we got to West Quoddy, we were delighted and amazed to discover that the light was open to the public, for four hours, one day a year–exactly when we happened to be there!

Maty at Centre Street ChurchMaty took part in the services at both churches on July 8, extended greetings from her church, and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to experience a bit of life in Maine. She especially appreciated the special Spanish music prepared and presented by our bell choir and the chancel choir.
