Deacons Fund
Over the past year, thanks to your generosity, the Deacons Fund at Centre Street has distributed over $8,000 to seventy families and individuals. Ninety percent of that money paid for heating oil, kerosene, propane, and electricity to keep people warm in the winter. The rest was used for urgent needs such as gas cards, bus tickets, or a safe place to spend a night.
Our deacons manage this fund based on their general assistance policy, serving the same geographic area as the Machias Area Food Pantry. Heating assistance is available once per heating season; general assistance, including gas cards, is available for emergencies every six months.
The Deacons Fund has been reduced to around $2,000, which is a long way from what will be needed next winter. We need your help.
