As you drive down the hill, heading north on route one, with the University of Maine at Machias campus on your right, you see Centre Street Church's steeple. And just below the steeple is this remarkable window.
Our current goal is to restore the Getchell Window. Stay tuned! |
Repair, Re-lead, and Protect Centre Street Congregational Church's 1899 Stained-Glass Windows On June 5, 2017 we began our "Open Window to Machias Campaign". Phoenix Studios of Portland, Maine completed the restoration of the glass and lead components. The actual wood working, storm window construction and general repairs was led by Kevin Ackley (Maine Molding and Millwork) with the assistance of Centre Streeters Harper Dean and Greg Maxwell. The project was completed in 2018 with tremendous financial support, including Judy Armstrong's financial and creative support through her Sweet Jazz concert started us off with almost $3000. Our request to the Belvedere Fund of the Maine Community Foundation resulted in their maximum gift of $15,000. With additional community support we raised another $22,000. After all was said and done, the total amount raised was the $40,000 that was needed for this restoration. Once completed, the window was restored, a new storm was designed and built (by Kevin Ackley), back lighting was added by Border Electric of Calais The Campaign Committee Harper Dean, Chair Susie Maxwell, Pastor Marge Ahlin Sharon Dean Ellen Farnsworth Lynne Gibson Cynthia Huggins Greg Maxwell Chuck Shipman Bill Wadsworth Ken Warner |
